I'm a stereotype, in a way

[MP3] Make A Right At Jordfallsmotet :: White Town

Hand to heart, if you trace your finger along the A2 local grid you will find a small area courageously named 'Boilley Spittal.' I've never staggered through, but I like to imagine it has a local shop, for local people. You know?

[mp3] Make A Right At Jordfallsmotet :: Agent Simple

Agent Simple made the first right, and White Town called in a year later. That's the way anthems work. They get passed around. And yes, this is anthem about small-towns, an apology and celebration. Pass this along to Boilley-Vaseymotet, would you?

We love it when our friends become disabled

[MP3] We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful (Beethoven Was Deaf version) :: Morrissey

For the record, it's perfectly acceptable to hate it when your friends become successful. Well, maybe by 'friends,' what I really mean is 'person you know just vaguely enough to have crossed feet underneath the dinner table on a few occasions.' But yes, perfectly acceptable (and yes, it's still perfectly acceptable to still convey your bad moods through Morrissey and headphones - I mean, the first time I was a full fledged twat to anyone I was wearing a Smiths t-shirt.)

Buy - Your Arsenal (especially because NME hated it).

The strange career of Goodbye Horses...

[MP3] Goodbye Horses :: Q Lazzarus

Occasionally, I do spot a bit of pop-culture consciousness that stumps me out of sheer delight. Like, for instance, my generation's complete and utter dedication to reliving Jame Gumb's, er, transformative dance from Silence of the Lambs.

Tucked (geddit?) on the sidebar, you'll find a brief flash sideshow of this very phenomenon. Triumphantly traumatized, as it were. You won't find me on there, of course, but it's still pashmina weather here so you never know.

I wear my new anaorak so I look quite smart...

Sometimes, I really do pray that the social revolution is just a mis-timed handclap away, or hidden down at the bottom of a [blue] plastic carrier bag and sung out by kids in basements who embrace everything absolutely unglamorous about themselves.

[MP3] Sad :: BMX Bandits

There are two versions of this anthem-y song, 1985's 'Sad?' and 1986's 'Sad!'. This is the first version. I'm afraid I can't play the second version to you as it has radical counter-cultural sentiments hidden backwards in the recording. Honest. I'd be very suspicious about that exclamation point.

Sweet Jesus and Mary Chain!

[MP3] You Trip Me Up :: The Shop Assistants

[MP3] Upside Down :: Elf Power

[MP3] Never Understand :: Tralala

Personally, I think Jesus and Mary Chain covers should be giving their own sub-genre to be rated something like 8 out of 10 on a scale of interesting-ness. Well, except the Tralala cover. They get a big fat 9 (written in calligraphy or illuminated lettering or something equally fitting) for adding handclaps.

That wanker from the telly

Tony, you did a good job. Basically, you were right - Shaun is the greatest poet since Yeats. It has already been written, in the sinews of history and on the hearts of men. It's a pity you didn't sign the Smiths, but you were right about Mick Hucknall. His music's rubbish and he's a ginger.

I didn't even get a postcard

[MP3] I Wonder If I Care As Much :: The Everly Brothers

As if by magic the strings are pulled from across the Atlantic and I'm suddenly sitting in front of a computer with the words "nostalgia and egocentrism in postmodern tourism" blinking on the page. Because they haven't released my bit of paper with my name on it yet. Because they can. And quite truthfully, because they were on holiday and neglected to tell me they required more written material from me before I left.

Maybe I shouldn't feel so guilty because I can't just get one with it, but that's awfully hard to do with The Everly Brothers playing at you and a sunny day outside. The Everly Brothers, who were known as Tennessee's teenagers despite actually hailing from Kentucky, because their first hit was released on Cadence Records. The Cadence version, however, doesn't hold a patch on Jarvis's though, as deadlines and frustrations are also meant to build and build and build.

[MP3] Prince Charming [Adam Ant cover] :: XXL - Xiu Xiu & Larsen

Yes, this rainy Sunday post is dedicated to Prince, the talking dog, who could growl the word 'sausages', and who had the most charming and handsome set of teeth ever seen on British television.

Oh Esther, so much to answer for...

Posh people are very scruffy at home

[MP3] That Boy That Girl :: Hadouken!

In my dreams, songs like 'LDN is a Victim' and the much, much better effort 'That Boy That Girl' by Hadouken! are a bit like a reverse Crime Watch for mortal sorts, which instead help identify fruitful targets for arson.

But, if grimy eletronic cross-over tracks aren't really your thing and all this talk of arson and posh twats has made you feel a bit violent, then there's always this classic track (classic in that it was the b-side to a not very popular Damned 7"). Watch out for scratches and confused gender roles.
