Fortywinking hallelujah

[MP3] Don't Blow It :: Cliff Martinez

Yes, it may be a bit sad that between Bargain Hunt and Top Gear that the best thing on television at the moment is this Volkswagen advert. But I happen to think a bit of ambient electronica goes very well with Dylan Thomas.

We go up and down in every other way

[MP3] Round & Down :: The Bats

So, finally, I've managed to track down another copy of the much beloved (and much lost/damaged/loaned) Daddy's Highway by The Bats, which has to be one of the most exceptional examples of indie-pop ever to be lacquered and pressed. It's, well, Bat-tastic. Endearing, even. Catchy certainly. Even for 1987.

The indie disco staple 'Made Up In Blue' was actually a bonus track on the re-release, which means I didn't even hear the track until a few years ago at an, erm, indie disco (or the American version of an indie disco - Wednesday). I think I've already praised the bass line everywhere, but I'm sure there was something in the Geneva Convention that stated one can't mention The Bats without reference to 'Made Up In Blue'.

Still, 'Round & Down' is my highly recommended favorite off the album and I've just learned this morning that it goes down quite well with grumpy builders (much better than my tea, sadly).

But this is where I'll stay

[MP3] My Place:: The Adverts

My place. Here it is!

We've gone to quite a bit of trouble to present you rubbish more neatly formatted and pleasing to the eye.

Here it is!

My place!

More from me in a bit, but in the meantime here's a fun trick...Find a bloke over, let's say, 35 who's a bit musically minded and say 'Gaye Advert'. Just watch the look in their eye! It might be enough to make them draw their (lace) curtains and start rummaging in their old vinyl.
